Leadership is Influence and influence is Leadership.
Last evening, as I watched the social media buzz about the the land slide victory of MP-Elect Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine I could not help but think about a sermon by TD Jakes. In this sermon Bishop Jakes talks about the 3 kinds of people that we encounter on our journey to Destiny. I will quickly summarise them and pause some questions for critical minds.
The Confidant: These are people who will be with you through think and thin. These people will stand with you no matter what. They will cry with you and laugh with you. Every man needs these and on the campaign trail Barbie Kyagulanyi and a handful of people, 10 at the most were Bobi’s confidants.
The Constituents: These are people who stand with you because you represent their views. The convergence of your ideas forms a special bond that sees them support you along your journey to Destiny. These guys manned the poling stations and made it to the rallies. MP- Elect Bobi Wine was great at articulating the issues that resonated with his constituents and the people of Kyadondo agreed with him. The tallying at the polling stations was testament to this.
Then there are the Comrades. These are people that don’t care what you are about but the mere fact that you have a common enemy they will ally with you to fight the common enemy. I would like to imagine that many of the people that showed up at the polls were there to fight a common enemy. This was not made any better by the arrest of the Bobi Wine a day before the election. What better way to rally comrades?
The point I am simply making is the democracy we have been handed by our colonial masters might be our greatest impediment to progress as a continent. While no one will get on a plane and sit pretty while the pilot announces his love for the destination and zero flying experience. We do it in leadership and policy formulation. Well, the Americans did it, who are we?!
Some things I am still pondering:
Of the over 25,000 people that voted for Bobi Wine in the recent election, is it possible to tell what percentage fall in each category?
Is it also right to assume that many of us have dis-engaged from leadership and have merely become scaffolding to “our leaders’” political careers?
That said, I am a great admirer of Bobi Wine and I am a constituent of his.I believe that God is with him on this journey.
I pray that he surrounds himself with the right people and I am sure we shall get to the future we all hope for, the future he articulates both in speech and song!
Well done Bobi Wine!
