As they say, you can only plot your path backwards.
Like many people, I believe I have been leading by accident. At the end of this story you will know why I am thankful to Harvest Institute. I have purposed to make life intentional starting this year, 2017.
It was in 2006 when I personally met one of the world’s best leadership teachers and mentor. I still remember that first conference I attended with Dr. Myles Munroe as a speaker at Winners’ Chapel in East London, UK. I had been to conferences where the speeches punctuated the “entertainment” but this was my first conference where we were going to simply listen. It was going be two hours of leadership training.
He was invited to the podium and the applause he got made me think, this guy must be good. The crowds were massive. I thought that it was because the event was free that we needed to get there 30 minutes early. I had never interacted with him at all, not even in book or on television. I had browsed him on TV but never paid real attention to him. Then he got the microphone and started with greetings from his wife and children before declaring he was born on the greatest place on earth…The Bahamas! I have not been, but I have heard and seen the pictures of the beaches of the much loved honeymoon destination.
So, Miles begun to speak and he asked a simple question. “How many of you have albums in your homes?” Many hands shot up, mine too. Good! We all have them don’t we? He continued to intrigue me. …and when the visitors come you pull them out and begin to show them the memories of your past. I have come, to help you to create an album and when visitors come, you will pull it out and show them the pictures of your future with clarity and articulation! I bought his books and endured the queue for an autograph and a picture with him.
I must say that it was my first time to hear anyone talk about leadership as firstly taking charge of an army of one.
You are a leader of yourself he said. If you’re leading yourself, you cannot be simply taking a walk. You must have a clear goal and destination.
This was the beginning of my love for his message of Kingdom and Leadership. I have since been a great fan and I attribute the start of my leadership journey to him. His death hurt me, I felt a great connection to him.
At the end of the meeting my friends and I begun to envision the future. I remember we walked out of train stations like we were stepping out of airport terminals ( Ivan Mugisha remember that day?). It is strange how that picture often plays out every time I travel, especially when traveling on international business. It even prompted a Post on the GREATNESS of Our GOD which I shared on Facebook.
PAINTING THE PICTURES OF TOMORROW
When I started out in business, I remember sitting in the one roomed office alone, a few months before Jeremy joined me. I had no one to talk to and often had moments to reflect. I found myself thinking and on this day I interrupted myself and spoke out loud. “God you’re up to something here!” On this particular morning, I begun to paint pictures of the future. Thanks to Facebook I have some of the records of what kind of picture I was seeing. I must say it is taking shape now.

Here our Creative Director Jeremy was giving our visitors (Kelley Nikondeha , Matthew Brooke , Kris Williams, Shane and other friends from Communities of Faith) a tour of NOMAD.
I couldn’t fit in the frame because the office was full on the day.
I am persuaded that Leaders are indeed to lead people, by not simply going ahead of them, but ahead of time and clearly painting a picture of the future. It is that picture of the desired future that will attract those that want to realise it with the leader!
We can only go ahead of time if we are connected to the Author of TIME.
If any leader isn’t in touch with the ALPHA and OMEGA, it won’t be long before they run into trouble!
I was encouraged by this picture:
Here are a few examples of businesses that went ahead of their time.
DON’T SEEK TO LEAD PEOPLE. GO AHEAD OF TIME!
