Today the internet is one place that we all run to when looking for ideas or information about literally anything. Social-media on the other hand has connected people like never before. The only challenge is that most people are connecting at a horizontal level based on likes, dislikes and other uniting factors some of them petty or even meaning less if you will.
I have observed that the most vibrant groups on social-media (Facebook, WhatsApp and Twitter) are groups where people are constantly complaining about something or someone. I can accurately state that the reason this is the case is because these groups have no leaders and in these cases the default mode is COMPLAIN. If you ever find yourself in any of these groups, I dare you to challenge the members and provide leadership towards solutions, chances are you will be ejected or eject yourself. Leaders don’t have a high thresh-hold for complaints and excuses.
Leadership is simply taking RESPONSIBILITY / AUTHORITY. This means that as a leader you are “authoring” whatever it is you’re leading.
It would be foolhardy for an author of a movie script or book to get surprised by how things are panning out in the story they are writing. When leaders take the pen and begin to write the future, there’s silence about the present.
If you’re not intentionally leading in your sphere of influence,
you’re part of the burden – Ariho Kamara
Reading the story of Joseph and his brothers in Genesis and applying a little creativity got me thinking more. Let me exposit on the verses that challenged my leadership thinking.
GENESIS 37: 14 Then he said to him, “Please go and see if it is well with your brothers and well with the flocks, and bring back word to me.” So he sent him out of the Valley of Hebron, and he went to Shechem.
So Joseph was indeed the favoured son of Israel he was also an easy going son. He was easy to send and from this scripture, we see that Joseph was a with in his father’s reach always.
GENESIS 37: 15 Now a certain man found him, and there he was, wandering in the field. And the man asked him, saying, “What are you seeking?” 16 So he said, “I am seeking my brothers. Please tell me where they are feeding their flocks.” 17 And the man said, “They have departed from here, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” So Joseph went after his brothers and found them in Dothan.
Joseph having been give a specific place to search out his brothers has is not going to take back a negative report. He wondered in the valley and even made inquiries to find his brothers. He was willing to go the extra mile and take a conclusive report to his father.
GENESIS 37: 23 So it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the tunic of many colors that was on him.
As his brothers rough him up and strip him of his coat of many colours, the bible is silent about joseph’s pleas for mercy from his brothers. Many people faced with this challenge would be quick to try and cut a deal to save themselves. Joseph isn’t recorded to have begged, pleaded or even tried to fight back for his life. He is not complaining.
GENESIS 37: 28 Then Midianite traders passed by; so the brothers pulled Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt.
Joseph must have been a different type of slave; I think he could have been the “house negro” type. The one who submitted himself to his slave owner and worked with diligence and excellence even when he wasn’t being paid for it.
It is with this kind of service that Potiphar saw his leadership capacity. Because everything that Joseph put his hand to succeeded, it was not long before his master gave him authority over all things in his household.
GENESIS 39: 6 Thus he left all that he had in Joseph’s hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate.
From this portion of scripture, I can say that Joseph didn’t try to claim his rights, he knew he was righteous and no amount of abuse of his rights was going to change that. He knew that he was better off leading rather than complaining about his situation. Joseph served with excellence and not once do we hear him protesting.
GOD ORCHESTRATES WHERE WE SERVE
BUT HOW WE SERVE IS OUR CHOICE.
Stop complaining and Start Leading.
